It’s not every day you get woken up in a Madrid hotel room, the sun cutting itself through the flimsy material of the cheap motel curtains. Knowing I was heading out to shoot one of my all time favorite cars was enough to get me up & motivated, whilst avoiding the Jamon breakfast. This was an insane situation, one that I'd have to pinch myself to make sure I wasn't dreaming.
Vaughn Gittin Jr’s Ford Mustang RTR. I mean come on look at it, how can you possibly not love this car and everything about it! It just looks so aggressive and daunting, and don't even get me going on the bark from the V8 that lays beneath the vented hood.
After getting sun-drenched on the track for most of the day, it was at the very end of an action packed event that I took advantage of the Spanish setting sun. It was almost like we were in an old-fashioned Western - the perfect drape for the All-American machine...
There are many things people ask Vaughn, such as what's your favorite car, best moment in drifting, etc, etc. So, I thought hey lets not just write another copy of his bio, his FD wins and the run-over of Aasbo.
JR doesn't just drift, oh no! He is the Grand Slam Champ at karaoke and not only do his vocal cords hit a pretty note, his taste in Pizza is the Shizznit! Crafting a sweet and spice topping that would make the greatest Italian weep.
The livery of Vaughn’s Mustang is so simple, but yet so powerful. The design and concept for the markings on the beat came from WWII boats - In a car that is larger than most drift machines, it couldn't work better and cuts it's own mark against the normal barrage of eye assaulting sideway rockets with a billion logo's sprayed down the side. ASD the guy's behind the car and the build have taken the time to build a machine that would get the nod from the highest of motorsport teams. While drift is still seen as the renegade racing of today, this ASD built machine is nothing short of racing paddock grade-A finery.
The longer I got to look at the Ford Mustang, the more I got to see all the little details. These are the type of things you'd never normally notice until you're really up close and personal. These go as far as a picture of lion in the footwell that JR uses as motivation while cranking this beast into corners at untold crazy speeds
Looking down the front of the Mustang is like staring down the barrel of a loaded gun.
If you're reading my blog for the first time, in-fact if you've never heard of the main man Vaughn Gittin Jr before you might be mistaken in thinking he is just another driver - you'd be wrong. This Ford Mustang isn't a straight off the shelf edition, it's an RTR (Ready To Rock) and JR is the driving force behind the development and works alongside Ford in making the hotter, more powerful, models of the Blue Oval fleet. It might be a bold claim to make now, but this guy is set to be the Carol Shelby of our generation.
As the crimson night sky started to darken and dusk became night it signaled the end of the time I had with this 700hp beast and it's pilot - I was just taken back about how impactfull both car and driver are - larger than life, all American and serious business - it's the team, car and driver that our sport needs.
