Going into the final round of the Time Attack championship at Brands Hatch last Sunday the championship wins were all to play for!
Never have I seen such close standings going into the final. With just 50 points separating the top spot in Club Pro, between Marc Kemp leading with Andrew Barbour just behind. In club Pro 2WD Charlie Butler-Henderson led by 40 points ahead of Bo Nielsen with Mike Cantello 10 points behind Bo in his mighty VX220.
In the Pro class Gavin Renshaw went into the Final round 50 points up on Gareth Lloyd. One thing was sure and that was Brands was going to be interesting.
The cars lined up in the pit lane, for morning warm up to go out and get a feel for their cars around the 1.2 mile Brands Hatch Indy Circuit which gave teams the chance to tweak car set ups to get the most out of them for the afternoons qualifying and Final.
Once the warm up session had finished I headed back to the pits to see the awesome cars up close.
SVA Imports did not have such a relaxing day, after discovering a gearbox problem in the morning where the sequential box was stuck in fifth. They had to completely dissemble the whole front end of Gareth Lloyd's Evo, to remove the gearbox, once off they found the small piece of metal which made the gearbox get stuck in fifth, then re-shim and reassemble the car, In just a couple of hours.
"Time attack gives you wings" apparently...
Paul Doyle watches over the team working on his subaru,
One hit wonder, non point scoring guest car at the final round was, the 1000Bhp, Space Frame AG-Motorsport Focus ST, the acceleration of the car was mind blowing
It was time for practice, where the lap times continued to drop considerably.
When the time for qualifying came round, instantly you could see the drivers pushing their cars harder around the track.
Drivers put in crazy times during the qualifying, Club Challenge FWD driver Will Watson went fastest in class, beating fellow class driver Marc Donnelly, making it all alot closer for the final, with Will possibly in with a shot of winning the championship in his class it really was all down to the final for the decider.
The SVA Imports Evo was fixed and ready for the final, it was great to see the teams hard work had paid off and got it out in time,
You could feel the nerves of teams and drivers in the pits, everyone was nervous before the final,
the cars lined up and the drivers focused on the task ahead.
I switched on the mobile live timing, and got set up for the action.
In the final, if a driver has their headlights on it shows they are on a flying lap,
It's great to see a driver on a flying lap and then look at the live timing and see they have just smashed the previous best time!
In the last few minutes of the final, Gareth Lloyd completely smashed the time sheet, putting in an unbelievable time of 46.8 seconds, it just was not beatable in the remaining time.
The chequered flag wave and that was it, the times were in and the 2013 championship was done!
With Marc Donnelly going faster than Will Watson in the final, that gave Will a Second place in his first time attack season!
Neil Holden took First Place of Club Challenge N/A in his Civic Type-R Mugen!
Umar Masood got the Top spot in Club Challenege RWD
Panic Link Motorsport's Marc Kemp won the championship in Club Pro!
Massive congratulations to all the drivers and a big thank you to everyone who makes this awesome championship possible! It has been an amazing year of time attack, and I will sure be there next year!
