So this Friday past I went to Killarney for the Street 2 Strip Drags. Haven't been on the strip before and I wanted to see what kind of time I would get.
I must say that the coolest part of the strip is pushing your car to the starting line and chatting to all the other drivers. Only went for three runs after which I called it quits coz the line was vrek long and I knew my times weren't gona get better.
At first I thought that I'd do pretty good coz my car runs pretty well on the road and it pushes out a shit load of torque IMO. My tyres are a bit worn but I didn't think that it would make a big difference, If only I knew. After my first run I realized that there is a huge difference between the strip and the street.
1st run:
I was excited at the start line, my first time on the strip, thinking this is my 10 seconds of fame.
I launched the car as I usually do on the road, big mistake, wheels spinning, hit second, wheels still spinning, hit third, wheels still spinning, only when I hit 4th did I actually manage to get traction, I ran 17 seconds, felt dissapointed, but then I realized that the strip is not the street.
2nd run:
Deflated my tyres to get more traction on launch. Decided to launch at 2000rpm instead of 2500rpm as I usually do. Same as the first run I had, this time managed to get traction in third, ran a 16.4 seconds. I couldn't believe what was happening, I started to think that so much torque isn't always a good thing.
3rd run:
Decided not to launch at all, was a bit better than the first two runs, but I got a red light. I think those lights were a bit buggy, I was standing still, don't know what went wrong there. From pull away wheels starts spinning again, got some traction in second gear just before I hit third, decided to call it a night, clearly I wasn't ready for the strip yet.
I will need to practice controlling my car's launch on wet roads before I hit the strip again. Was alot of fun, at least I have strip experience now, alot different from what I thought it would be. Hopefully next time I'll get it right, then I'll run that 10 seconds I was hoping for.
